Mongol Rally 2017
Day 49: you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here
Miles: 243 countries: Kazakhstan -> Russia? NOPE -> KazakhstanWe woke up by the restaurant to more looks, Justin had a baby wipe bath in the car only to realize the restaurant camera was pointed straight at the car window. Lol.We packed up, still hungry and refusing to eat anything here and hit the road. We were 100km from the border and we both got a huge pit in the stomach. We've been so optimistic up until now that we'll just be able to show up at the border and bribe our way into the country. Well, we woke up this...
Day 48: I'm radioactive, radioactive
Miles: 415-450We woke up, packed up, had some tea, took a picture with granny, and headed off. The day may have been uneventful and nothing really happened but it was still never a moment of boredom between wailing out to Disney for hours and doing crosswords. We ate a watermelon in the car which was a feat on its own between feeding justin and spitting the seeds out the window while bouncing around like a pinball on the craptastic roads. Justin then, all too eagerly, threw the whole carcass out of the window to watch it explode as it hit...
Day 47: and the stones in the track make work for the mechanic
Miles: 300What a day. We woke up at 7 and tried to figure out how to kill time until we heard from the convoy of 4 teams in the same city as us. We figured we could tweak a few things in the car and change the other shock absorber since it was also leaking. We asked the first guy we saw where we can find car parts and he sent us one way saying we won't miss it. There was nothing there. So we asked another guy who spent 10 minutes, very animatedly, giving us directions in the exact...
Day 46: shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Miles: 268 countries: KazakhstanWe started the day off slow reattaching the sump guard yet again just on the main road. Two local cars stopped by and we chatted, they tried to help, and pointed us in the right direction to a welder. On the way to the welder, we got flashing lights from a passing car that we had a flat. It was hard to tell on these "roads". Justin hammered it in and we continued our way to the town where the welder was closed. Not wasting time we continued on which brought us to the Grand Canyon. The...
Day 45.2: I am cow, hear me moo, I weigh twice as much as you
We wanted to make it into Kazakhstan today to stay on schedule and had found out that the border closes at 6. The roads were craptastic; worse than we even imagined. Justin was speeding right through though, which inevitably broke the temporary wires holding the sump guard. He got under the car and did a half ass job to attach them as fast as possible to continue on. Doing the math, we were going to get to the border at 5:50. Around a random corner was a police checkpoint. We got pulled over and we were freaking out slightly that...
