Mongol Rally 2017
Day 45: Keep making me laugh – Let's go get high The road is long, we carry on
Miles: 160Countries: Kyrgyzstan We got a few pictures with the yurts, the beach, and the mountains, and started making our way towards the Kazakh border. We didn't get very far before we saw a random sign for some holy springs. We stopped to check them out but it was a pretty big disappointment and we were pretty sure the water we were told to drink and would heal all ailments would actually make us ill instead. Confirmed, it did. Not even 10 minutes later, we saw another random sign for "Fairy Tale Canyon". How do you ignore that? We paid the...
Day 44: Let the storm rage on, the cold never bothered me anyway
Miles: 205Countries: Kyrgyzstan We started the day off by having our first scrambled eggs breakfast curtesy of our tank friends. We happened to have veggies and they had eggs and bread, and more importantly, a working stove. We dined like kings, they pulled our car out of our "situation", and we continued along the "highway". Just so we're clear, the worst road you can imagine back home, is better than this "highway", it doesn't even qualify for a "back road". It was beautiful and in true spirit of the Mongol Rally, we had to pull over and fix the sump...
Day 43: we go over the mountains and under the stars
Miles: 150-200 countries: Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan We slept in an ancient Kazakh city, Taraz. Absolutely gorgeous and SO clean. We had grabbed some "burgers" at a 24 hour diner and were told we could sleep in the parking lot and they'd keep an eye on us. They also said no one robs in Kazakhstan which we keep hearing everywhere we go here, the people are amazing. We really felt like part of a circus as we were taking our setup down in the morning. Everyone was watching us and we've found no one on this side of the world even hides the...
Day 42: you're hot and you're cold, you're yes and you're no
Miles: 450-500We woke up planning on getting our way into the cosmodrome one way or another. Having no wifi, we messaged back home over the satellite radio (probably flagging us anyway) to look into how to sneak in and got some disappointing messages about it potentially being a one way trip, likely turning into a diplomatic incident, and the roads being booby trapped around the complex. We debated trying it one more time but the fact that it's $5000USD and you need a Russian visa to even visit the cosmodrome along with big guys with big rifles turned us off....
Day 40-41: my house is your house, your house is mine
Miles: 325Countries: KazakhstanStops: i give up, don't know how to spell any of these towns Playlists: Black Keys, Assorted pop, Pool PartyNot long after the pullover, we saw a sign for an upcoming police station. With heavy sighs, we slowed down again to well below speed limit (not that we were ever speeding to begin with). Just past the station was a bridge over a river. We pulled off and parked under the bridge. It was 40 degrees: we needed a swim and the watermelon was calling our name from the trunk. That watermelon though, best watermelon ever! We did...
